Lightbulb Varnish? wood siding

I looked at a cabin that is sided with log siding. Appears to be western pine. It was covered with what appears to be some kind of clear varnish that has turned black from sun exposure in some areas and is blistering in others down to bare wood in others. At this point he wants me to do my best to clean it and get it ready for him to seal it. I told him that after I finish wash, it may need to be sanded to do it right. Any suggestions???

It really depends on the amount of maintenance you want to do or pay for over the coming years and the look you want. Penetrating wood stains won't give you the sheen of a surface coating but will last a lot longer over time, especially where it is exposed to the sun. Different stains have different properties with regard to mildew and consumer reports does periodic tests though the formulations change year to year so the tests are only a guide.

Complete chemical strip followed by an acid neutralizer, then buff with osborne brushes. Best method period for siding. If it were a real log cabin, cob blasting might be the best route.
